Summary: | Pedro Almodovar's newest film, a paean to women as actors navigating a grim landscape of misfortune, offers a variety of mishaps: loss of an only child, a nun getting pregnant and ill, a transvestite prostitute being beaten. The story follows Manuela (Cecilia Roth) as she attempts to recover from her misfortunes. Grieving, Manuela pursues an embittered reunion with an old lover. Along the way, she happens upon several others suffering, and soon gathers a community of pained women around her. What little mirth Almodovar offers holds an edge. Manuela stands in triumphantly for another actress in a theatrical performance which represents an incomplete purging of old pain and new for Manuela, and it leads to a reliving of her recent loss. |
