Summary: | Attacks by Sierra Leone forces this week have caused thousands of Sierra Leoneans to flee their country to Guinea, according to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). On Tuesday, Sept. 30, more than 3,000 Sierra Leoneans crossed into the Forecariah area of Guinea "after rebel forces reportedly killed civilians and burned down dozens of houses in Kukuna village, four kilometers from the border in the northwest of Sierra Leone," said UNHCR spokeswoman Judith Kumin. The UNHCR, a humanitarian branch of the United Nations, has the arduous task of providing international protection and emergency assistance to the newly arrived Sierra Leonean refugees in the Gueckedou region of Guinea, as well as in the Upper Lofa County of Liberia. |
