Summary:[Mike Hein] said work could still begin this summer on the northern part of the I-10 widening project if the state agrees to split it into two parts. That would let work be done on the northern half of the project - from Prince to roughly St. Mary's Road - while the study is being conducted on the depressed stretch of freeway from around St. Mary's Road to 22nd Street. The tunnel concept is what originally spurred the idea for Tucson to ask the Legislature to extend the special tax district, Rio Nuevo, which was authorized by voters in 1999 to redevelop Downtown. The man shepherding the bill through the Legislature, Rep. Steve Huffman, said the delay would not affect the bid to extend Rio Nuevo past its current 10-year life span.
