Summary: | The oldest record in track and field fell night to the U.S. 4x400- meter relay team led by Quincy Watts and Michael Johnson. The 4x400 team of Andrew Valmon, Watts, Johnson and Steve Lewis ran the relay in 2:55.74, breaking the world record of 2:56.16 set by the United States at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City (before two of the four team members this year were born) and tied by the 1988 U.S. Olympic relay team. It annihilated the British team that won the gold medal at last year`s world championships and gave Johnson, the top- ranked 200- and 400-meter runner in the world, his chance for redemption after failing to qualify for the final in the 200 meters. |
