Summary: | ANSWER: Almost exactly a century earlier, Mark Catesby began publishing his Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands in segments, from 1731-48. During the winter of 1765-66, John Bartram, King George III's botanist for the Floridas, took his son William on a trip up the St. Johns River, keeping a journal of the birdlife he observed. The younger Bartram later returned to Florida and in 1791 published The Travels of William Bartram, listing 215 species of birds observed in Florida. The volume is still in print. |
