And then, because the player she had reduced to rubble was the gracious Gabriela Sabatini, one of the very few who had genuinely seemed to miss her, and because she now understands just how it feels to be a victim, Seles shed a few tears out of sympathy. But for all 49 minutes of their one-sided 6-1, 6-0 semifinal, the businesslike Seles wore her game face. As an embarrassed Sabatini later pointed out after winning only a single game: "She didn't let me play my game. I didn't play so bad; she just played great.
