Summary: | They aren't the two Americans who were supposed to be decorating the Centre Court at this late stage of waterlogged Wimbledon, but Todd Martin and MaliVai Washington don't seem intimidated by their opportunity to fill in for the dethroned Pete Sampras and the deposed Andre Agassi. "Everybody who deserves to be in the semis will be in the semis," proclaimed Martin, who got there only to be marooned by rain Friday just after he and Washington were ready to start the fifth set. "To see Mal and I, the fifth and sixth American players, come forth and do well here says a lot," he said. Martin, a finalist at the 1994 Australian Open and a Wimbledon semifinalist that same year, and Washington, a Grand Slam ingenue when it comes to anything beyond the quarterfinal round, each showed resilience and resolve Friday. Martin took the first and third sets, and Washington took the second and fourth sets of this unresolved 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6 showdown between the two Michigan-born ex-collegians. |
