Summary: | A prodigy in purgatory, Jennifer Capriati hit another tear-stained roadblock Tuesday on her comeback trail at the Australian Open, a Grand Slam tournament she last visited in 1993 and a Grand Slam in which she had never before stumbled in the first round. Not since Wimbledon in 1993 has Capriati's Grand Slam compass guided her safely past an opening round, and despite encouraging results from recent Corel Tour events, her compass failed again at the wrong time. Assigned to Court 3, Capriati toiled on the windswept fringes of this ever-expanding property. While freight trains rumbled by on the adjacent railroad tracks and coveys of crows cackled overhead, 78th-ranked Jolene Watanabe played a coy, conservative match and let the erratic and "overanxious" Capriati dig her own grave. |
