Summary:The answer is that seals have become a cult. To urban people opposed to the hunt, killing a seal is not like killing a pig or a cow. It's more like killing a dog or cat, although the vast majority have never laid eyes on a live seal. I don't think the people who actually hunt seals understand how deeply these animals are now enshrined in the psyches of city dwellers who oppose the hunt. The reaction to the recent video explaining the many uses of seals demonstrates this.
