Summary:  1. Work hard. Being an athlete or even trying to gain muscle for the beach takes work. Not the kind where you go and spend 40 hours a week in a factory. This type of work means having your workout filled with exercises that work more than one part of your body, such as squats that help build your lower body and core. What you want little of when lifting are exercises that isolate your muscles, like alternating bicep curls. You want exercises that work as many muscle groups as possible. I call them "bang for your buck" exercises. You must lift weights heavy enough to tax your muscles while maintaining perfect form. This type of lifting will cause a hormone release that will help build that muscle.
