Summary:Charleston had 188 incidents reported to police during the first quarter, with the greatest number of them - 48 - for aggravated assault. Dorchester District 2 reported 57 incidents in the first quarter. Of that, 12 were students carrying pagers on campus, which is against state law. Dorchester District 4 reported seven incidents in its six schools during the same time period. For example, there were nine weapons offenses in Dorchester 2, none of which were real guns, said William Shirey, administrative assistant to the superintendent. Two incidents involved students with toy guns, and one involved a student who found a bullet and brought it to school to show friends. The Charleston County School District tallied 20 weapons offenses, two involving handguns, one involving an unidentified firearm and 17 involving knives or other sharp objects.
