Summary: | All over the world again this Easter, Christians will gather on hilltops or beaches as the sun comes up. Children will hunt for prettily decorated eggs. People in gay new dress will crowd into churches beautifully decorated with lilies and greenery. These and other Easter symbols are deep rooted in antiquity or pagan customs. Eggs represent the new life that returns to nature in the spring. In ancient times it was forbidden to use eggs during Lent so they were brought forth on Easter with ceremony. Early Christians of Mesopotamia were the first to color eggs for Easter to represent the joy of the Resurrection. The shell symbolized the tomb that is broken and from which the Life emerges Eggs laid on Good Friday and eaten on Easter are supposed to insure good fortune. |
