Summary: | (The New Pittsburgh Courier has partnered with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Visit Pittsburgh, the Senator John Heinz History Center, and other regional institutions to develop "Live and Learn Weekends'' featuring the Unfinished Work Book Discussion Series. Visitors and Pennsylvania residents are invited each weekend to experience the historic sites and special collections along 1-76 and 1-79 and the Commonwealth's Quest for Freedom - Underground Railroad Trails. Weekends also include historic tours, special exhibitions, living history presentations, restaurant dine around opportunities and great lodging packages. This is the first in a series of articles that are a part of the New Courier's support of these interactive weekends, the first of which is Feb. 8-9.) The few surviving documents written by those who assisted-often referred to as the Underground Railroad "conductors-provide some indication of what those traveling on the railroad endured. Many traveled at night and had to find shelter and safety during the day. Bounty hunters or "slave-catchers" with horses and dogs pursued them. Hunger, starvation, disease and illness were often their companions. |
