Summary: | HOMER SIMPSON and Hal (the father from Malcolm in the Middle) can so easily be misread as nincompoops. Episode after episode they present as dupes or morons and sometimes as reprobates. In a recent Malcolm episode, for example, Hal ends up in hospital suffering whiplash, doped up and strapped up in an over-sized head cushion while his wife, Lois, in labour, waits for him to take her to hospital. (Don't even ask how he got himself into that predicament.) Given such an example, TV fathers such as Hal and Homer are nincompoops - but only if their tribulations and characters are read literally. |
