Summary: | "It took PDP (Park Downsview Parc) 12 years to hold their first annual meeting. That's enough for suspicion that they're effectively landlocked," said Marco Iacampo, the NDP candidate for York Centre in the federal elections, who also works as an aide to area councillor Maria Augimeri (Ward 9, York Centre). "I think the park is a brilliant idea, but the politicians should get their act straight and lobby to make sure this happens." For his part, PDP president and CEO Tony Genco also dismissed concerns over the perceived delay. "The government wanted to be comfortable we had a solid business plan. The Department of National Defence also had to be comfortable to transfer the land. And I'm looking towards the future, not lamenting over the past," he said. Of the roughly 570 acres of former military base land handed to PDP by Canada's Department of National Defence, 320 acres is planned to be park space consisting of a new forest, lake, quiet meadows and several active recreational facilities. New facilities for at least 12 different sports are also planned, and PDP is currently collaborating with Canada's Olympic Committee about the possibility of a building national sports program on the area. |
