Summary: | As expected, [Gary Ablett] and his family were no-shows, leaving long- time manager Michael Baker to accept the honour on his behalf. Mr Baker read a prepared speech, in which Ablett said it was "a great honour and privilege" to join the Hall of Fame. Ablett is allowed one weekend a month to visit family, enabling Ablett to see Gary Jr carve out his own dazzling career with Geelong. In his welcoming speech last night, AFL Commission chairman Ron Evans said he hoped the induction would help Ablett return to the game. Mr Evans also strongly defended the decision to delay Ablett's induction until this year. |
