Summary: | SHOULD Andrew Mehrtens apologise to Andre Watson? An example of this flaw was when Dan Herbert was caught in a bear- hug, ball-and-all tackle by Chris Jack yet was then penalised for not releasing the ball. Players quickly lose confidence and respect for the referee when his rulings are so inconsistent. (The natural progress of the game is also spoiled when players resort to more kicking rather than risk another penalty.) Mehrtens may have been out of line with his criticism but he summed up the feelings of many players and fans. Then again, perhaps he's done [Watson] a big favour -- that is providing the leading referee is prepared to listen. |
