Summary:Given that there will not be a fall sitting of the B.C. legislature and that North Coast MLA [MLA Gary Coons] will not get the opportunity to represent our riding in that building, will he be as effective for local voters? Without being shackled to the day-in day-out grind in the Lege, Gary Coons will be free to spend a lot of time in his constituency. He will be free to attend local meetings, workshops and protests right here on the North Coast, instead of having to miss grass- roots political happenings because of being trapped so often far from home in Victoria. Unfortunately for Coons, the NDP -- while enjoying a stronger voice in this parliament than the party had in the last one -- still has little say in the actual business of the legislature. Legislation still gets passed or crushed largely according to the whim of the provincial Liberals. Therefore, the NDP's voice in the legislature is largely one that can sound warnings or call for action but that rarely has enough votes on the floor to do anything concrete.
