Summary: | Kelvin Peach, who became a partner in the film business [Stan Wemyss] and his father, Noel, had established, used to go to Sydney to have film processed and stay at the Student Prince Hotel in Camperdown, which Crowe's parents, Jocelyn and Alex managed, having moved to Sydney when Crowe was 3. He recalls a six-year-old [Russell Ira Crowe] bounding on to his bed and saying: "Mr Peach, I've decided I want to make pictures like you." He asked if the young Crowe wanted to be a film- maker or on the other side of the camera as an actor. "He thought for a minute and said `no mate, I'm sure I want to be on the other side of the camera'." Crowe left Auckland Grammar and finished his education at another high school, before trying a musical career -- as singer Russ Le Roq. Terrence O'Neill-Joyce, then owner of the independent Ode Records, recalls Crowe aged 17 or 18 coming to him with a song he had written: I wanna be like Marlin Brando. O'Neill-Joyce gave Crowe a go and recorded the single but it bombed and critics panned it. Crowe still enjoys his music -- he recently released an album with his band 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts. |
