Summary:Defending his decision to award a greater share of 25,000 reallocated university places to New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, Dr [Brendan Nelson] said it was a "fair deal" because students would also gain access to a generous loans scheme for full- fee places if they had insufficient marks for a funded place. A total of 9002 places will be reallocated to NSW and the ACT, 6297 to Queensland, 4214 to Western Australia, 2349 to Victoria, 1471 to South Australia, 1003 in Tasmania and 547 to the Northern Territory. Victorian Education Minister Lynn Kosky said yesterday she was "shocked and furious" over the decision to award the state just 9 per cent of places compared to NSW (36 per cent), Queensland (25.3 per cent), Western Australia (17 per cent) and South Australia (5.9 per cent).
