Summary:Fairfax editorial director Mark Scott, who has strong Liberal Party connections and is on good terms with federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan, will take up the position shortly, bringing to an end a political battle over the position. Yet he refused to confirm the appointment last night, even to his own newspapers. Mr Scott, who will fill the post vacated in January by Russell Balding -- who left to take charge at Sydney airport -- has enjoyed a rapid rise at Fairfax, publisher of the Herald and The Age. Mr Balding faced criticism for his lack of editorial or broadcasting experience. But he had already worked at the ABC for six years and had demonstrated he was a capable manager.
