Summary: | John Howard yesterday apologised to Ms Rau and Vivian Alvarez after releasing the 248-page [Mick Palmer] report which blamed systemic failings in the Immigration Department for their wrongful detention. Mr Palmer also criticises a decision not to refer to police Ms Rau's allegations made during her time at Baxter that she was sexually assaulted. As a result, Baxter staff were open to allegations of misconduct even though Ms Rau refused to sign a complaint form. Ms Rau's sister [Christine Rau] said last night the ordeals suffered by [CORNELIA Rau] and Vivian Alvarez could be avoided if they were treated as people rather than cases. |
