Summary: | IN music criticism, evocative is a somewhat hackneyed word. In the case of desert demons Calexico, however, it's entirely apt. Formed in 1996 in Tucson, Arizona, by Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico is described as a blend of country, jazz and guitar rock mixed with Tex-Mex, mariachi and Ennio Morricone- inspired western sounds. As they did in 2003 on their first Australian tour, Calexico rode into town and shot the place up like cattle rustlers. They emerged onstage as a three-piece, with vocalist-guitarist Burns and drummer Convertino joined by Paul Niehaus on pedal steel for a bare bones rendition of Spoke and windswept instrumental Drape. |
