Summary: | Japanese Story won eight gongs at the annual Australian Film Institute awards, including best film, best direction, best original screenplay and best actress for its star, Toni Collette. It outstripped the film that went into the awards with the most nominations, Gettin' Square. The crime caper, set on the Gold Coast, picked up only one award, the best actor gong for David Wenham's comically revolting portrayal of the mullet-wearing, drug-addicted crim Johnny Spitieri. The ABC's medico-legal drama MDA dominated the TV section, winning best drama series and best actor and actress for Shane Bourne and Angie Milliken. The Ten Network mini-series After the Deluge also won three gongs, including best mini-series. Andrew Denton's Enough Rope picked up best light entertainment series, and John Safran's Music Jamboree won best comedy series. |
