Summary:[Bill Mitchell] battled cancer for the last six years of his life and wasn't expected to see out 1989. However, he was at the first presentation in 1990, and on stage. With a grin from ear to ear, he pointed out the name of the award needed to be changed because "I'm not dead yet". The 2005 winner, Jason Chatfield, took up drawing the Ginger Meggs comic following the death of James Kemsley. "I always had a great admiration for Bill's work, which has had a major influence on my own style. A great deal of credit is due to The Australian for running the award," says Chatfield.
