Summary: | My growing apprehensions about the direction of city council were spurred by some declarations of principle by Councillors Dan Schnurr and Dan Moziar in "Schnurr regains finance post" (The Guelph Mercury, Dec. 10). In particular, I am concerned about their approaches to fiscal responsibility in the name of being "analytical" and as an exercise in "prioritizing". What worries me is not simply the goal of fiscal responsibility, nor is it the prospect that the committee will analyse and prioritize all staff recommendations in order to achieve this goal. Rather, my worry is about the poorly formulated way in which all these principles seem to be conceived. And if the principles are not conceived properly, citizens can hardly have confidence in the way they guide council's work. If the comments by Schnurr and Moziar are any indication, I fear that the present council will sound very much like Lewis Carroll's Red Queen who promised Alice jam every other day: "jam tomorrow and jam yesterday -- but never jam today." |
