Summary: | As Canadians, we are privileged enough to live in a society in which the law treats men and women as equals, and rightly so. Nonetheless, I bear witness every day to more and more evidence that perhaps the roles and expectations regarding the equality of men and women have not progressed so far as we believe. That is not to say that this issue is gender-specific. On the contrary, both males and females experience these inequalities in their own ways. They view it as something of a trap, even a perpetuation of the absurd notion that they must strive to attain some universal concept of beauty. Some aspire to reach this pinnacle of beauty without even knowing that they are doing so: knowing only that they experience a feeling of self-loathing when they fail to conform to it. Women can wear "male" clothing without seeming at all out of the ordinary; however, men who wear "female" clothing are viewed by many as shameful or somehow ignominious. |
