Summary:My goal here is not to criticize competitions. It is a worthy experience and I would rather see people compete even to excess than to see people use their skills to fight in bars and discotheques. Nevertheless, we must differentiate karate competitions from "real" karate. What do you need to have to become a champion? Good physical skills, strength, speed, agility and "one or two favourite techniques." In two years, if a student has talent you will have a champion that will be the pride of your school and will help attract many new students. But is this the real objective of karate and martial arts? See you next week.
