Summary:Welcome to the first monthly column about nature in the Kawarthas. This column is a partnership of Kawartha Field Naturalists; Friends of the Osprey - Kawartha Lakes; and Federation of Ontario Naturalists. The Kawartha Field Naturalists (KFN) have been exploring this fascinating area for nearly 20 years. With close to 90 members, this group shares a contagious interest in ecology and conservation issues, including community education. The Kawartha Field Naturalists monitor salamander populations, participate in forest bird counts and contribute to the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas, all of which help to track changes in the local ecosystem, population changes and species extinctions. Many of these activities take place in the 389 hectare Altberg Wildlife Sanctuary Nature Reserve near Norland, owned by the Federation of Ontario Naturalists and cared for by the KFN.
