Summary:The faculty members of the Women's and Gender Studies Program, as well as 60 other academics at the University of Regina, have written to the board of governors of First Nations University of Canada, protesting the firing of Dr. Shauneen Pete as the vice-president (academic) of FNUniv. We urge First Nations University to accept the principles of higher education, including academic freedom, that are fundamental to the creation and dissemination of all forms of knowledge that characterize the globally accepted definition of the "idea of the university". The All-Chiefs Task Force recommended a smaller, depoliticized board that would respect and incorporate First Nations culture and governance traditions, ensure governance effectiveness and efficiency, incorporate high-quality governance standards, enable the linkage with, and participation of, the universities' ownership and improve accountability. Unfortunately, FNUniv board has not implemented these recommendations and its reputation and standards continue to suffer.
