Summary: | The next reference to the history of the congregation comes following the union of 1861 when the United Presbyterian and the Free Church of Scotland groups united to form the Canada Presbyterian Church. Following this union Williamsford was placed under the care of James Cameron, the minister of Chatsworth and Dornoch Presbyterian Churches. In 1866 the log church in Williamsford was replaced with a frame church. In 1872 Williamsford and Dornoch were separated from Chatsworth and for many years the Williamsford congregation was linked with a number of different congregations in the area: from 1872 to 1880 with Dornoch under Archibald McDiarmid; from 1880 to 1894 with Berkeley; from 1894 to 1900 with Crawford under James Anderson (1896- 1898); from 1900 to 1904 with Desboro under Thomas Abbot Nelson; from 1904 to 1910 with Desboro and Holland Centre under Archibald McLaren (1904-05); William H. Montgomery (1906); and Malcolm Nicholson Bethune (father of Dr. Norman Bethune) (1908-10). On Sept. 28, 1883 the Presbytery of Owen Sound appointed John Somerville to form sessions for Berkeley and Williamsford. At the same meeting Berkeley and Williamsford were officially erected into congregations. |
