Summary:The case is a prime example of the problems plaguing the University of Saskatchewan's college of medicine, Saskatoon District Health and the provincial Health Department, according to the college's orthopedic surgeon who tried unsuccessfully for days to arrange surgery for Blackstock in Saskatoon. Aside from the patient's painful wait, the surgeon's frustration and the high cost of air ambulance services, sending Blackstock to Calgary also meant that Dust's medical students missed an opportunity to observe a rare surgery. Saskatchewan surgeons treat only a handful of such fractures each year. Health Minister John Nilson was sent e-mails detailing the Blackstock case shortly after the incident occurred. In an interview, Nilson said he couldn't talk about the specifics of any patient's case.
