Summary: | When the thriller, which starred [Orson Welles], Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh, was completed more than four decades ago, the Universal brass disliked it so much that they re-edited it and insulted Welles further by releasing it as the bottom half of a double bill. An anguished Welles subsequently wrote a detailed 58-page memo explaining how to restore the film to his original vision. It wasn't until the late 1990s, years after Welles's death, that Universal authorized editor Walter Murch and producer Rick Schmidlin to restore and re-edit the film on the basis of Welles's guidelines. That version was released theatrically to rapturous reviews two years ago. Now it's come out on both video and DVD. |
