Summary: | They called out the National Guard in Yorktown and Poquoson. Newport News estimated damages at $140,000. The 911 system went down in Hampton - but cell phones picked up the slack. At the Harwood's Mill Reservoir, 400 million gallons of water spilled over the top. * The Newport News Reservoir in Lee Hall is usually 17.5 feet above sea level; at its maximum during the storm, it reached 19.7 feet above sea level. The storm caused 350 million gallons of water to overflow, into spillways designed for it. The storm brought 360 million gallons of sewage and storm water into that system. Overflow shouldn't have caused problems, though, according to Keith Benson, director of the HRSD interceptor systems. |
