Summary: | Classes were canceled in Newport News, Hampton, Isle of Wight, Williamsburg-James City County, Charles City County, York, Gloucester, [Mathews], Middlesex, King William and King and Queen counties. West Point canceled classes but central school office staff, principals and secretaries reported for work. Some government offices, including Charles City, Mathews and King William counties, were closed. Others, like Isle of Wight, York and Gloucester counties, opened two hours late. Hampton and Newport News city offices were open although Newport News General District Court was closed. On [Adolph Chiappa]'s orders, six trucks carrying mail to post offices in Gloucester and Mathews counties waited at their Richmond loading docks up to six hours longer than usual until their routes to the Middle Peninsula were deemed safe for travel, he said. |
