Summary:Staff photo (color) by KENNETH D. LYONS Citizens crowd the Newport News City Council chamber Tuesday night to voice their feelings on topics ranging from grant money for Habitat for Humanity to Riverside Regional Medical Center's zoning request. Mug (color) of Bernie Evans "I'm not here because they told me to ... Riverside, I know, spends gobs of money landscaping. It's certainly going to enhance the area. I think the focus has been on a narrow area instead of the overall benefit." Mug (color) of Lynn Elliott "I just think they're (the hospital) being really a bit arrogant. There are very few green spots left. I fell we don't have enough green spots as it is. I'll fight for a tree any day." Riverside had said it needs to rezone its 75-acre campus at the corner of Warwick and J. Clyde Morris boulevards in order to have the flexibility it needs for future expansion plans. The hospital wanted three separate parcels switched to a single commercial zoning category. The only definite plans it had announced for the wooded parcel were for a parking lot and for a new access road from Warwick Boulevard.
