Summary: | Sept. 9: Viking 2 is launched toward Mars in 1975. E.E. Barnard discovers Jupiter's moon Amalthea in 1892. Sept. 29: New moon. In 1988 the space shuttle Discovery (Hauck, Covey, Lounge, Hilmers, G. Nelson) is launched, marking America's reentry into space, following the Challenger disaster of January 1986. About this time, though, Jupiter shows up in the east. It's in the constellation Gemini and shines more brightly than any other star in the sky. Because of the Earth's rotation, Jupiter also drifts westward; by dawn it is high in the southern sky. |
