Summary:Sept. 9: Viking 2 is launched toward Mars in 1975. E.E. Barnard discovers Jupiter's moon Amalthea in 1892. Sept. 29: New moon. In 1988 the space shuttle Discovery (Hauck, Covey, Lounge, Hilmers, G. Nelson) is launched, marking America's reentry into space, following the Challenger disaster of January 1986. Because of the Earth's rotation, Jupiter also drifts westward; by dawn it is high in the southern sky.
