Summary:Mass demonstrations by pupils, street protests by parents and emergency meetings were held in a dramatic show of defiance following the news that 22 schools across Cardiff face the axe. Within hours of yesterday's announcement that the schools could close and a further 10 could be merged, those worst affected moved swiftly to make their voices heard. At Cantonian High in Fairwater, students held a mass demonstration on the school playing fields to oppose the plans. Year 11 pupil Emma Hurt, 16, of Windsor Green, Ely, who is studying for her GCSEs at the school, said: 'I'm gutted our school is closing. I wanted to be able to take my children to the school when I have them. Now I won't be able to. It seems unfair.' Fellow student Sam Jones, also 16, of Llewellyn Avenue, Ely, added: 'We don't want the school to close. We've grown up here. It's brilliant. That's why we held a protest.' In Whitchurch, an emergency meeting was called last night at Eglwys Wen Primary. The school faces closure to make way for an expanded Welsh-medium school, Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd.
