It is illustrated with black and white cartoon-like drawings. Children often love the study of the ancient past. Their interest should be encouraged with excellent history and engaging activities that help them master the lessons of the past. "Explore Ancient Rome!" does not quite meet the high standards of most children's history books. (Barbara Handy-Marchello is retired from the history faculty at the University of North Dakota.
