Summary:The medical name is haemorrhoids - swollen blood vessels in or around the back passage - and one in three of us get them at some point. They usually bleed when you go to the toilet and your bottom can feel itchy. One telltale sign is small blood spots on toilet paper. Constipation is usually the cause - when you strain, the veins swell and bleed. Triggering factors include a low-fibre diet, skipping breakfast or eating on the run, and putting off going to the toilet. And pregnant women are also prone because the baby puts pressure on the veins around the rectum.
