Summary: | The Associated Press article on the Paris riots confuses me: It cites "marauding youths," "attackers" and "troublemakers" wreaking havoc in France, but offers scant detail on who is rioting or why. It mentions only once that the rioters are predominantly Muslim, and then only in efforts to explain the riots as understandable responses to oppression, racism and poverty. The article prompted three questions: How does a company in bankruptcy afford to pay someone $8.2 million for 18 months' work? Was the Page One picture of Michele Burns laughing taken on her way to the bank? After Delta Air Lines and [Mirant], which employees and stockholders does Burns have her sights on now? Good news for Delta Air Lines management: Michele Burns cost Mirant $8.2 million in severance, pay and other benefits, while Delta's cost was a mere $4 million in pay bonus and bankruptcy- proof pensions, saving $4.2 million that can now go to pay off creditors. |
