Summary: | The family unit has been under assault for more than 30 years. The 1970s gave us no-fault divorce, which made it as easy to leave a marriage as it is to quit a job. The chattering classes who pushed for easy divorce told us that children were resilient and that they would adjust. That all that mattered was that the two adults were happy. Yet, we see decades later that women and children have suffered with lower standards of living and untold emotional consequences. Why would we want to allow a second attack --- in the form of same-sex marriage --- that would continue the trend toward the separation of marriage and parenthood? Scandinavian countries have experimented with marriage for more than a decade. There, the message has gone out far and wide that traditional marriage itself is outdated, and that virtually any family form is acceptable. Is that the type of culture we want to leave to our children and grandchildren? I think not. |
