Summary: | As a member of the Piedmont Park Conservancy and the Atlanta Botanical Garden, I applaud both for their many contributions to Piedmont Park, but I'm concerned about their proposed five-story parking garage ("Piedmont Park may get garage," Metro, April 26). Children of all races should be taught what happened. Now, they are expected to get excited during Black History Month about George Washington Carver playing with peanuts while 99.9 percent of blacks could not participate in the Industrial Revolution. After slavery, if whites had embraced blacks as equals under the Constitution, [Jay Bookman]'s column would not have been necessary. All Italians paid for the mob image associated with them. All white Southerners paid for the violent racist actions of some. There was guilt by association. In time, white, Hispanic and Asian students who adopt ghetto dress and manners will move on and join adult society. Regretfully, like the Italians before them, all African-Americans will be tarnished by the ghetto image so many now adopt. |
