Summary:While everyone is discussing the appropriate memorial for [Maynard Jackson], don't forget Freedom Parkway. When Mayor Jackson first took office, tremendous political and business pressures were placed on him to support, or at least not oppose, the Stone Mountain Freeway. This nefarious public works project would have decimated dozens of communities from the Old Fourth Ward to Inman Park to Druid Hills to Decatur. Jackson stood his ground in support of the intown neighborhoods, and today we all benefit from a 200-plus acre park in East Atlanta anchored by the Carter Library. Without Jackson, it would all be concrete and cars. As the richest nation, the United States should lead the world by contributing its fair share to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. At the same time, [George Bush] should support U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and others in declaring a moratorium on illegitimate World Bank and International Monetary Fund debt. This would allow many African nations to begin to address the crisis with their own resources.
