Summary: | Two good neighbors recently rescued me from a busy roadside in Florida, and I wanted to thank them. James Kanter of Brussels and his sister Sarah Brown of New Orleans also saved my 49th birthday. Sarah is a copy editor for the New Orleans Times Picayune and James works for Dow Jones in Brussels. They were kind and delightful. After our brief introductions and recognition of the remarkable coincidence, they suggested that they save my friend the trouble of driving out to rescue me and that one of them drive my car, followed by the other, across the bridge. I pondered, as James drove my brand-new car across the bridge with us sharing newspaper war stories, whether trust among journalists is similar to honor among thieves. James and Sarah, thank you for saving me from the alligators in my mind and giving me a memory of a chilly Florida dusk warmed by the generosity, trust and compassion of two travelers on the road. |
