Summary: | The recent editorial on Iraq was so off base as to be offensive ("No way for Bush to justify unprovoked war with Iraq," @issue, Aug. 7). It declares that to overthrow Saddam Hussein would be to adopt "essentially the rationale imperial Japan used to justify its attack on Pearl Harbor more than 60 years ago." Never mind that Japan's aim was imperial expansion while America's is to liberate Iraq from a genocidal dictator. Israel has reoccupied the West Bank, controls all the major cities of occupied Palestine, has tanks and troops controlling every aspect of Palestinian life, uses tank cannon fire against children, attacks crowded civilian areas with bombs and F-16s provided by America, bulldozes the orchards of farmers, steals their water so Israelis can fill their swimming pools and imposes unlimited curfew. The Palestinians do not have an army. They do not have 155 mm self-propelled artillery, as do the Israelis. They do not have American-made Apache attack helicopters armed with machine guns and antitank missiles as Israel does. All the Palestinians have are rocks, old Soviet assault rifles and young people desperate enough to blow themselves up in an effort to fight their occupiers. |
