Summary:Assembly Minority Leader Walter Kunicki (D-Milwaukee) said the Milwaukee police union and the Wisconsin Education Association Council were making a major push this spring to pass the bill ending residency. He said Republican legislators were helping. The new speaker of the state Assembly, Rep. David Prosser (R-Appleton) said he had always opposed bills ending residency requirements but said a number of other Assembly members both Democrats and Republicans wanted at least a debate on the issue. Prosser said he would not use his power as speaker to simply bury the residency bill, as Kunicki did when he was speaker. Instead, Prosser has referred the bill to the Assembly's Urban and Local Affairs Committee, which is expected to hold hearings and take a vote on whether to recommend passage.
