Summary:  "Everyone sort of froze," said Lance Bird, who watched the crash happen. "I was shocked at how kids were transfixed. They were mesmerized by the crash." Bird said the audience of about 3,000 -- including hundreds of children -- was stunned. Bird said that during the entire routine, the plane appeared as if it were in trouble. But the spectators assumed that was how acrobatic flying was supposed to look. Bird said that, before the crash, the air show had a county-fair atmosphere. Children climbed into parked airplanes, and vendors sold food. Music played from loudspeakers.
