Summary: | The reluctant departure from community-based policing was brought about by budgetary restrictions that prevented police manpower increases from paralleling the rise in crime and population. Beginning in the 1960s, police administrators in many cities were required to make major changes in deployment in an attempt to meet the steadily increasing demand in called-for services. Two-man cars and beats were eliminated to provide more single-manned vehicles for a more rapid response. This resulted in a serious loss of personal contact between the police and public that is so necessary for crime prevention. |
