Summary: | It is very easy to say with-profits are unsatisfactory. After all, I've built an entire career around it. And there are undoubtedly enormous problems. Equitable Life certainly doesn't help. But proprietory companies go down the tube every day of the week. Equitable didn't fail because it was a with-profits company or a mutual. If there was any way of salvaging with-profits in an acceptable way, I would favour that. The ordinary investor is not horrified by the with-profit concept. Quite the contrary, it appeals. Which is why the Equitable saga is such a shock. |
